No tongue out? Miley Cyrus looked sophisticated in a sleek Alexandre Vauthier black bandeau, leather pants and metallic heels at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday, Aug. 24. The singer is set to present at the live show and is nominated for Best Direction and Video of the Year for her emotional hit “Wrecking Ball.”
The 21-year-old’s outfit was scaled back compared to her eye-catching and colorful beaded ensemble at last year’s VMAs. At the time, the star rocked a Dolce & Gabbana off-the-shoulder crop top with matching leggings. She added a pop of red lip and wore her hair in two little buns.
Cyrus hinted that she has a surprise in store for the show, but it is much different than her unforgettable performance last year. “I hope what happens tonight — there’s something I’m doing that is really special that I’m really excited about,” she told Lucy Hale and Sway on the red carpet. “I’m not going to say anything because I don’t want it to get canned. I think it is going to leave a different kind of impression.”
She also discussed how Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” music video recently topped her “Wrecking Ball” for the most online views in 24 hours. “I heard she just beat that sh-t! But I don’t have that ass,” she joked. “I can bring that body and that wrecking ball but I can’t bring that ass — that anaconda.” (Cyrus hit 12.3 million clicks in one day. Minaj beat her with 19.6 million.)
Cyrus (and her infamous foam finger!) stole the show last year during her over-the-top, raunchy rendition of “We Can’t Stop” and “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke. Stripped down to a nude-colored bra and matching underwear, the controversial singer provocatively waved her prop around, twerked, and grinded up against the R&B crooner.
Cyrus appeared more than satisfied with her performance. Thicke, on the contrary, distanced himself from the singer afterward.

As exclusively reported, Thicke — on good terms with wife Paula Patton at the time — became angry with Cyrus for “going too far” on stage. “Robin is jealous Miley’s career took off after that,” a second insider told Us at the time. “He thinks she hijacked the performance.”
